Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP Therapy is a safe and effective tool for helping many painful chronic and acute injuries.  When the body is injured, it's first response is to deliver platelets to the damaged area, to initiate repair.  PRP treatments utilize your body's own natural regenerative and healing mechanisms by introducing a concentrated dose of platelets to the injured area.  These treatments have been shown to repair tissue in chronic injuries, decrease the progression of more serious injuries, decrease the overall time for healing, and decrease the need for surgical intervention.

PRP Therapy provides many powerful health benefits with little or no side effects.  Conditions that PRP Therapy has successfully helped:

SHOULDER: rotator cuff tendinitis, impingement, bursitis, bicipital tendinitis

WRIST AND HAND: DeQuervain's tenosynovitis, tendinitis, ligament tears

ELBOW: golfer's elbow, tennis elbow

HIP: iliotibial band tendinitis (ITB Syndrome), ilio-psoas tendinitis and bursitis, greater trochanteric bursitis, sacroiliac joint dysfunction

KNEE: patellar tendinitis, strained or partially torn ligaments (LCL, MCL)

‚ÄčANKLE AND FOOT: Achilles tendinitis, peroneal tendinitis, recurrent ankle sprains

NECK AND BACK: arthritis, disc degeneration, rib pain

What Can I Expect In An PRP Therapy Session?

PRP therapy begins with collection of the patient’s blood. The blood sample is centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other components of the whole blood. The concentrated platelets are then injected into the site of injury.  Platelets function as a natural source of growth factors that enable the injured tissues to be repaired. The growth factors secreted by platelets initiate tissue recovery by increasing collagen production, enhancing stem cell proliferation, and stimulating blood flow, which will result in firmer and more resilient cartilage formation.  All of these natural healing mechanisms will enable repair of injured tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. The doctor will determine the appropriate recommended number of treatments after completing your consultation, examination, and any necessary testing on your initial visit.
‚ÄčYou may experience a temporary increase in pain in the days immediately following a PRP injection.  Intensity of pain becomes less each day as strength and functional ability improve. You will notice continued gradual improvement for 2-6 weeks following PRP therapy and many patients report ongoing improvement for up to 9 months after PRP therapy.  MRI and ultrasound imaging have demonstrated definitive tissue repair following PRP treatment.
