Top Five Things You Can Do For Your Health

Top Five Things You Can Do For Your Health

I often get the question, "If there was only one thing I could do for my health, what would it be?"  That's a tough one because one thing that may work for one person may not work for someone else.  There is no one-size-fits-all approach to health.  However, I can give you, in my opinion, the top 5 things you can do for your health in no particular order.  As always, make sure you are consulting with a qualified clinician to coach you back to health.
1) Exercise
We were created to move.  Any exercise is better than no exercise, in my opinion, but if you want the best bang for your buck, high-intensity, short-duration exercise aka metabolic conditioning is the way to go.  The beauty of this type of exercise is anybody can do it.  An example program for metabolic conditioning looks like this:
Sprint/bicycle/jump rope/etc as fast as you can go for 20 seconds.  Take 20 seconds off and repeat for 10-12 minutes.  Metabolic conditioning only needs to be done 2 times per week.  That's it.  Piece of cake.
2) Take care of your gut
It's estimated that up to 80% of our immune system resides in our gut.  That means if your gut is "off", you're 80% sick.  Think of your gut as a 30 foot tube.  If you take care of the tube, you will be well.  Nutrition is primary here.  As I already mentioned, there is no one-size-fits-all approach.  That applies to nutrition as well.  Also, our gut bacteria outnumber our cells 10 to 1.  Our gut bacteria have their own DNA.  Certain foods, toxins and other stressors can actually mutate our bacterial DNA and wreak havoc on our guts.
3) Fasting
Humans were created to through periods of time of famine.  It's that simple.  Eating frequently isn't necessary nor is it healthy.  Start going one day per week without eating.  Then, four times per year during the season change, do a 7 day fast.
4) Sleep
Going to bed early and waking up early.  Sleeping is important.  That's when the body heals.  Try going to bed no later than 9 pm and wake up around 4 am.
5) Controlling your mind/meditation/prayer
Seems like thoughts can't be controlled sometimes, right?  I'm with ya.  A really effective meditation exercise would be to just listen to your breath.  Focus on that every morning.  You'll find that your mind calms.
